Every week, we’re participating in #totalhonestytuesday, sharing the things we’d usually keep off of social media, and giving a little more insight into our real (and very un-perfect) lives. Hopefully, in doing this, we can all feel a little less pressure to appear a certain way online, and remember that everyone around us is much more than just the highlight reel we normally see.
ladies– FEEL YOUR BOOBIES !! we tend to show only the glamorous, well-lit and staged slices of life on Instagram, but @faganchelsea has created a really great hashtag, #totalhonestytuesday, to share what makes us human. this morning I had lumpectomy surgery on my left breast, to remove a lump I found in July while doing a self-breast exam. It was the first time I had done a self exam because the thought had never crossed my mind– I'm young and healthy and still under the delusion that nothing can harm me. But that self-exam changed my life because we caught it early, so please please please feel your boobies for any lumps or weird things that shouldn't be there!! #savethetatas

#totalhonestytuesday I had no idea how to use one of these things before I moved here. I just spent the last 10 minutes fumbling around hitting buttons (while soaking wet, since I had to jump out of the shower to answer it), as an angry UPS delivery guy waited for me to figure it out. Moving to NYC has made me really aware of how much I didn't know about the world, and this little task was a reminder 😁

One of my least favorite Internet trends is when people give advice that they would never actually take. I have always appreciated that on TFD, there are real people talking about solutions that actually work for them. With that in mind, last week, I wrote a list of tips for people who are good with money but forgetful as hell (me!), and the one tip from the list that I always ignore is to get a wall calendar. So, in the spirit of practicing what I preach, and on #totalhonestytuesday, I finally bought myself a calendar.

#totalhonestytuesday these pictures are from a few years ago during a typical Saturday morning outing with the boys.. My sweet nephews and my dad at Waffle House. I now have a new niece. I keep telling myself that I'm going to be a good example to them. That they might go to college because I went. That they might take chances because I did. I tell myself that, but I worry that they'll forget about me, because they're young and I'm not there, and it's hard to build a relationship with them when the relationship with my brother is barely there. But I'm hopeful. And I'll always be their aunt, even if they only see me a couple times a year. But I always feel guilty that I can't be there to take them to a movie they're not supposed to see, or pick them up from school when they're not getting along with their parents. I wish I was there.

For my #totalhonestytuesday I would like to be honest about the fact that Zach and I have an adorable kitchen and we never know what to cook in it. Anyone have any recipe ideas for us? I'm getting a little tired of grilling chicken and vegetables! #vsco #westcoast #upperleftusa #pnw #pacificnorthwest #recipe #food #kitchen #foodstagram #life #lifestylephotography #lifestylephotographer #recipes

I'm a day late for my first #totalhonestytuesday, forgive me @faganchelsea! I've been coveting the idea of a #capsulewardrobe for a long time now but have always thought of myself as too broke to make it happen. My partner and I have had an intense year with only me working full time and her starting a business (holler back @ladyjusticebrewing!) but she has begun full time work and so goes a cleansing that I've needed for a long time coming. More clothes do not define me – the person behind them does. Here's to attempting to simplify and to recognize that I don't need to live into what I thought wealth was as a poor child: things. I'll be posting a frugal guide to creating a capsule wardrobe (possibly on TFD if Chelsea is into it, of course) soon. Yes, it includes thrift shopping and yes, thrifting to me means Goodwill, not expensive resale shops 🙂

#totalhonestytuesday My makeup sucked yesterday and made me feel gross. As soon as I washed it off my face, I looked in the mirror and thought, "Damn, girl! You're gorgeous!" I don't have eyebrows, I don't have the best skin, and my forehead is huge, but it's my face and I take really good care of it. As much as I love makeup, sometimes a naked face and self confidence is so much better. There's no shame in loving yourself. #nomakeup #nomakeupselfie #girlswithglasses #nakedface #pretty #selfconfidence #bigforehead #bigbrains #nofilter

Packing up my office stuff on this #totalhonestytuesday, and I found a stack of copies of my first book that I still have because my rule when it came out was "only give one if people ask, it's weird and sort of desperate if you just give them away to friends and family." I had anticipated that more of my friends in my hometown would ask for them when I went back for Christmas that year, but not that many did. To this day, most of my friends from that era of my life have never read my book, nor asked about it. And while I've since drifted from most of those people, and the two or three that remain close I treasure enormously, I still get sad when I look at the stack of books I brought to my hometown to give to people, still sitting in my closet two years later. Celebrate your own victories, and hold close to those who celebrate with you. A true friend and supporter is a rare, beautiful thing.

Today's #totalhonestytuesday…yall saw that Charlie and I went on an AWESOME road trip last week, but there was a lot of meticulous planning and budgeting that went into the trip behind the scenes. Road trips can get really expensive quickly if you aren't careful, so we tried to plan ahead for what we just had to do and see. The trip was amazing, but I worked hard and busted my butt to save up for it and boom. We made it happen. 🚘 (the list is quite a bit longer)

Empty Hangers》》 #wardrobe #clothing #organise #springclean #donate #organize #fashion #gamechanger #spring #totalhonestytuesday #commitment #coldturkey All guns blazing I put everything I don't wear in a box and immediately dropped it off at a local charity. Preventing me from stealing items from the "donate pile" like I have being doing for months.

#totalhonestytuesday sees me at home. Because I am learning how to "create the same feeling of luxurious experience that we think we're buying when we go out" (a direct quote from @faganchelsea!). Drinking wine out of a burgundy glass and watching one of my absolute favourite movies which I got out for free from my local library. Yay for Tuesday nights.

And every Wednesday, we’re collecting stories shared on the hashtag here, so we can read them together and start our mid-week mornings with a little honesty.
Share your own honesty next week, and join the conversation.
